Blog of helios: What Myth Do You Want To Kill Today?

A colleague and a friend of mine recently had to resort to moderating her blog comments based on the number of (kindness and light helios...kindness and light) uh,.... uninformed readers who insisted on trotting out the tired old line:
"Oh yeah...well Linux is only secure because no one uses it. You just wait until the hackers think it's worth messing with, then you'll see, Mr. smarty pants Linux user.
Sigh...
I think I want to run knitting needles through my eyes and brush my gums with a potato peeler.
Look, we're going to knock this down right here, and for all time, unless of course it gets proven wrong. I doubt that it ever will. this is going to be Linux security 101 for people that you send here to get the real story on how it works. It's going to be told via mildly condescending story-telling techniques and simple analogies. It won't go into Guru depth but we'll drill far enough down and unpack it enough to make our point. Is that elitist? Sure it is, but we're already accused of that anyway.
They haven't advanced the ball a bit by saying it.
Securing an environment of Windows platforms from abuse - external or internal - is akin to trying to install sprinklers in a fireworks factory where smoking on the job is permitted...Gene Spafford.
Here's how it works.
It was a different day, a different era when Microsoft Windows was born. The whole idea behind Windows was to make everything backwards compatible with everything else. Slight changes caused by a patch or upgrade would normally break currently installed software, so the engineers at Microsoft made it so that didn't happen. The code was written so that the system adapted itself to the changing API's and system calls. That way your favorite pinball game didn't stop working when a program using an almost identical dynamic link was called.
If you've rummaged around inside a Windows machine at all, you've seen that there are a number of seemingly identical dll's registered with the system. I'll bet some of you, in order to save hard drive space, at one time or another have even deleted some of them.
Oops.
"Honey, why is there a blue screen on the computer...? Honey...?"
They are not identical at all...they may have the same names but there are variations of code that make them unique to the programs they belong to. Another brilliant move by Microsoft...identical file names for different files.
In the first place, you should have never been allowed to even touch that file, but we'll get to that in a bit.
The point is, once malicious, evil hackers discovered that most code had free reign in a Windows system, they went to work. If legitimate code was allowed to cuddle with the system, why couldn't their's...kind of like the first digital STD's. Actually, we can thank Microsoft for vastly strengthening our economy, from their efforts sprang multi-billion dollar companies like Symantec, McAffee, Kaspersky...the stockholders were ecstatic.
The way that Microsoft Windows was coded insured that you would have to indeed pay for or use other software in order to insure the software you already purchased will work. There's some more of those dll's gumming up your works. Microsoft, not being the financial slacker, saw an opportunity to turn crap into gold. They actually "sold" space to these companies on their install disks so that they could give you "antivirus subscriptions". They found a way to make money on the sub-standard system they wrote and sold you.
You lucky dog you. And quite the wise consumer.
So with all this code running around loose in your system, it's no wonder that you have to wrap your computer in bits and bytes of security chains before you even connect to the internet. You just never know what you've picked up that will want to co-exist with the software on your machine. Here's what I find absolutely hilarious. Those antivirus and antispyware programs you use often, can slow your system down so much that it becomes an exercise in patience just to go from page to page. Many of you in turn blame viruses for doing what the antivirus software is actually doing. Your hard-earned dollars at work.
The Microsoft Windows file system, coupled with a user's free reign within that system is what makes Windows so fallible. There are absolutely no road blocks or speed bumps to deter reckless behavior or intrusion.
With me so far?
Good, we're gonna show you why Linux is light years safer than Windows.
What we got here is yer good ol' natural laws of the universe.
In Linux, there is a system of "user permissions" set up when you install the system on your computer. There are two parts to your system.
User Account and Root Account.
You operate as the user in Linux. In fact, and as in Windows, you can have as many user accounts as you want. There is, in some form, an Administrator account in Windows...it just doesn't function as one. Each account is an environment unto itself, and it evolves as the user interacts with that environment. Making changes to the color scheme and installing applications will dictate how the account changes as the user works. These are little worlds unto themselves and are not aware of other user accounts residing on that hard drive.
The root account, or Administrator account is a different story. It remains largely untouched as it exists only to keep order. If you install a program, it insures all the individual parts are in place and havoc does not ensue. Whereas you had all the permissions in the world to alter and ultimately screw up your Windows system, in a Linux environment, restricted privileges insure that order is maintained and access to critical files is controlled. The end result is a stable, reliable machine that rarely needs rebooting.
"Well helios, so much for Linux being all about freedom then. Turns out all that is a bunch of poop. Linux is actually an authoritarian, police-like system. At least in Windows I had the choice whether I could screw up my system or not."
You could look at it that way, but only if your ultimate goal is to eventually screw up your system. Besides, on a single-user machine, who do you think assigns the root password? You do, so ultimately, you have the same privileges you had in Windows.
Microsoft Windows assumes you are an idiot. Linux makes you leave irrefutable evidence.

With this system, if a bad guy should ever gain access to your machine via socially engineering you to initiate a script (you know them as .exe's), it can only cause its havoc within the user account. It cannot do silly little things like meander its way to your address book and send itself out to dozens or thousands of recipients. How do you think these viruses propagate so quickly? The root account, the keeper of the castle, will not allow the bad code to do anything but trash your own house...It's house stays in order. You can rebuild your system after a disaster in minutes if you are properly backed up. Oppose that to a 3+ hour Windows re-install.
And that's what this is all about.
Productivity and order. Natural Laws Of The Universe.
You know, I've worked Tech Support on and off for ten years now and Vista actually did implement a stringent Root account system. It makes me laugh to know that the majority of the bad attitude of Vista is that it makes you provide a password before doing certain stuff.
Gee...wonder where Microsoft got that idea?
Chances are, those commenters in Carla's blog really didn't know a thing of which they spoke. They had heard or read someone say that Linux was only secure because it is obscure and were simply repeating it to show off.
My dad had a saying he was fond of telling me...and he did it often as I remember.
"People can only assume your an idiot. Once you open your mouth, you prove it to them."
Think for yourself for a change. Stop to think that upwards to 70 percent of the Internet runs on Linux. Is that obscure? If what you say were true, wouldn't the Internet be brought to its knees on a daily basis? If it were Microsoft servers running the show, it may very well be. As our good friend Sander from LXer.com noted recently, even if you want to argue the merits of what I say, the obvious evidence is right in front of you. Google runs entirely on Linux. Now you run right along and hack that. And one more point for the road. Many of you sidestep this to the point of embarrassment. You insist on clogging your Windows System with Antivirus software for some reason. I have never, ever had a byte of AV software on my Linux boxes.
You need it, I don't. Deal with it.
The fact that Linux exists gives you a stable environment to dwell on the Internet. I'd be a bit more respectful and check my facts before I went leaving public record of my ignorance. What you say or do on the Internet never goes away. Carla should have posted those comments.

Blue Country Magic: The Agony of it All

Last week, as I minded my own business and began intensive work on a personal writing project that I aimed to finish, my computer decided it had enough.

Enough of me plugging in devices and using it for my own purpose. It wanted no more. The Gateway 830 GM had served me faithfully for over four years and it was sure its time had come.

The USB ports died. I first realized there was a problem Monday evening but thought little about it.

Tuesday morning, the external hard drive would not come up. So I thought it was the external device.

Then the computer wouldn't read my cameras. Or the printer. Or anything else, except for a very old scanner plugged in the back.

About the time I decided to unhook everything and haul it to Best Buy for a check up, everything worked again. So I backed up the hard drive and continued to work.

The next morning when I booted up, she was dead in the water where the USB ports were concerned. So I unplugged and headed to Roanoke.

The Best Buy guy, a young fellow attempting in vain to grow facial hair, said the problem sounded like a mother board issue. Of course while I had it on the counter his wireless mouse device worked properly in all ports so he could not be sure.

I lugged the thing back home. Of course when I set it back up, nothing worked.

A friend offered up her brother-in-law, who is a business computer technician. He could not come by until Friday, so I bid my time, limping along without the USB ports. It worked properly when he first arrive, but after a reboot everything was dead. After an hour he decided it was indeed some kind of serious problem and not a software or driver issue.

I had planned to replace the computer after Windows 7 was issued, (which happens in late October) not before, but since I really need a good working and reliable computer for my work, I knew my wallet would have to be a lot lighter.

Saturday I zipped around looking at computers. I took a little notebook and diligently wrote down model numbers, prices, RAM size, hard drive size, number of USB ports, card reader, etc etc. I visited two Walmarts, Staples, Best Buy, Sam's Club and Office Max.

Then I came home and looked at dell.com and other places.

After much discussion my husband and I decided I would buy an ASUS computer, because the tech guy and the Best Buy salesmen all swore that ASUS was the best component parts maker in the world and thus their computers must be the best on the market. Apparently they have been making computers for just a little while but parts for a very long time.

I ordered the computer online with pick up at Best Buy in Roanoke. Sunday afternoon we picked it up and returned home.

I began setting it up.

I noticed Sunday evening that the graphics looked fuzzy but I thought I simply needed to adjust settings. At one point I was concerned enough that I called the ASUS 24/7 tech hotline. I figured it wouldn't be too busy that time of day.

I received a recording.

The next morning, I began the set up process in earnest. Windows downloaded updates for a very long time. I used up a Norton Antivirus license, my last on a purchase that would let me put the thing on three PCs, and an MS Office license. Things were humming along.

And then I decided to see if the DVD player worked okay.

I put in a Lord of the Rings DVD. It would not show the picture properly. I had lots of pixel boxes all over the video.

Completely unacceptable, of course.

I then checked the device driver on my graphic card, fiddled with its settings, updated the driver - pretty much did everything I could except stand on my head.

Meanwhile, I started receiving a black screen and then it would come back with a notice that my graphics device had recovered from a serious error.

I called ASUS again, only to receive another recording. I checked their tech website in hopes of an online chat. No one ever appeared to help me out. I finally found a form I could fill out and request assistance. I sent off the request.

When no assistance was forthcoming after a couple of hours, I unplugged the ASUS and boxed it back up.

My husband and I went back to Best Buy and returned it.

Then I went around to several stores looking at brands and numbers again. I decided I wanted either a Dell or another Gateway.

Best Buy had a Dell and Gateway with similar specifications. The Dell was a little cheaper because it had fewer bells and whistles. I decided on the Dell.

Best Buy Roanoke didn't have it.

So we drove to Christiansburg at 8 p.m. to pick it up. We returned home about 9:40 p.m., because Christiansburg is not close.

So this today for a second time I have been setting up a new desktop. Norton was kind enough to allow me to transfer the license to this computer so I didn't have to pay for that again. I still had one license left on my MS Office so I installed that.

So far, so good. The Dell has withstood me for 7 hours now.

I did receive an email from the ASUS people about mid-day. Their response?

Do a full system restore. Hope that helps.

I do not recommend that brand of computer to anyone. I know parts can fail on any of them but their customer service certainly left me cold.
Gmail Growl: Problems with V1.5
Gmail Growl V1.5 has a bug which causes the program to crash under certain conditions. I hope to have this fixed soon.

Here we learn to hack a computer any where in this whole world.
A Major Notice If you are behind a router you will need to port forward your router. To do this you can use a DMS. Its hard to explain as every router has a different interface ( homepage that has a different layout ) so i suggest you go to Google and search portforward.com. It will teach you how to port forward your router there.

To begin with you will need these three tools,download them given below:

1.Daemon_Crypt

2.PC_GUard

3.Yuri_Rat

After downloading these tools ur first step is to open Yuri Rat and then click on server build

You should now have the following the screen

In this screen I want you to put your IP address into the DNS/IP section.

To get IP Address go to Start > Run > Type CMD and hit enter. When the black box appears type in IPCONFIG. You will then have your IP Address

Port: You Can Leave As Default (-7898-)

Assigned Name: Doesn’t effect how the server will work its just to keep you more organized so if you wanted to hack your friend “JOE” and specifically make this server for him then you may want to type something like “JOES TROJAN”.

Server Install Name: You should leave this as default as I myself don’t know what the difference is as every server you make is named server when it is 1st created anyway. Do not change it as it may make problems but I am not sure.

Ok as you can see there are more settings on the right hand side. I am going to recommend you settings for different purposes.

To Hack A Friend For Fun: Uncheck Everything Unless You Want To Do Optional
(OPTIONAL) Melt Server - Your server will disappear into another folder
(OPTIONAL) Custom Icon if you want to make it more believable or something then get an icon of super Mario or something you get my drift

To Find Out Valuable Information: Check Everything

Now You Are Finished Click Build.

Your server will then be saved to your C:\ or Hard Drive which ever you know it as. Now we are going to make the server about 90% Undetectable. Only once has one of my servers been detected by an anti virus and I think it was a Norton not sure which version. Ive scanned more then once with Kasper Sky & Symantec Anti Virus and every time they said its clean so lets begin

Open Up Daemon Crypt

Select Your File by clicking browse and going to the folder your server is in. If you have not moved it, it will most likely be in C:\

So Now You Have This

Click On Crypt and then you can close Daemon Tools

Now Install Your Pc Guard for Win32

When you open it you should get this

Ok you have to do basically the same thing as what you did with daemon tools. Click Browse and then find your server so that you have this

You then want to click on the General Settings and put these settings

Ok now you want to go to customization and make sure nothing is ticked

For the last step you want to click the protection methods tab and set it to plain. And then click on protect

Your server is now undetectable =)

Ok so now we created our server and everything is ready to go. Now our real work start trapping, say ur friend this is nice article on hacking or a sexy pic of a star, or u can trap him/her depending upon thier likes, The Server has been send to their system & they have opened it. If you checked the melt server option then the server will basically evaporate into their computer.

Ok so now you have the server running on there comp and it has opened up the default port for you to connect to.

Once again open Yuri Rat and click on listen. Yuri rat will then listen for your online servers that you have gave to people running on the default port 7898. If the person who you sent the rat to is not online you cant connect. When the server you sent out to his/her a balloon notification will pop up. Note that yuri rat should still be listening for the servers. The server will show up in yuri rat. You right click and press connect. And there you go. you are now successfully connected to your victim

Now withoutt up-loading plugins from yuri rat to his/hers pc u r able to operate certain files or programs such as download files from there pc & place ur files onto his/her pc.

When you are connected click on plug ins and them upload all of them.

In this tutorial you will learn how to hack a computer any where in the world. Ok well not anywhere obviously things like the military and the goverment will have very high security so you definately wont be able 2 hack them using this method. I hope not aniways =\.

A Major Notice If you are behind a router you will need to port forward your router. To do this you can use a DMS. Its hard to explain as every router has a different interface ( homepage that has a different layout ) so i suggest you go to google and search portforward.com. It will teach you how to port forward your router there.

Ok to begin with you will need these three tools

Ok now that you have these three tools your 1st step will be to open up Yuri Rat and then click on server build

You should now have the following the screen

In this screen I want you to put your IP address into the DNS/IP section.

To get IP Address go to Start > Run > Type CMD and hit enter. When the black box appears type in IPCONFIG. You will then have your IP Address

Port: You Can Leave As Default (-7898-)

Assigned Name: Doesnâ€™t effect how the server will work its just to keep you more organized so if you wanted to hack your friend â€œJOEâ€ and specifically make this server for him then you may want to type something like â€œJOES TROJANâ€.

Server Install Name: You should leave this as default as I myself donâ€™t know what the difference is as every server you make is named server when it is 1st created anyway. Do not change it as it may make problems but I am not sure.

Ok as you can see there are more settings on the right hand side. I am going to recommend you settings for different purposes

To Hack A Friend For Fun: Uncheck Everything Unless You Want To Do Optional
(OPTIONAL) Melt Server - Your server will disappear into another folder
(OPTIONAL) Custom Icon if you want to make it more believable or something then get an icon of super Mario or something you get my drift

To Find Out Valuable Information: Check Everything

Ok Now You Are Finished Click Build

Your server will then be saved to your C:\ or Hard Drive which ever you know it as. Now we are going to make the server about 90% Undetectable. Only once has one of my servers been detected by an anti virus and I think it was a Norton not sure which version. Ive scanned more then once with Kasper Sky & Symantec Anti Virus and every time they said its clean so lets begin

Open Up Daemon Crypt

Select Your File by clicking browse and going to the folder your server is in. If you have not moved it, it will most likely be in C:\

So Now You Have This

Click On Crypt and then you can close Daemon Tools

Now Install Your Pc Guard for Win32

When you open it you should get this

Ok you have to do basically the same thing as what you did with daemon tools. Click Browse and then find your server so that you have this

You then want to click on the General Settings and put these settings

Ok now you want to go to customization and make sure nothing is ticked

For the last step you want to click the protection methods tab and set it to plain. And then click on protect

Your server is now undetectable =)

Ok so now we have our server and everything is ready to go. Only thing now is to do some social engineering. Basically just lie to your friend/victim and tell them that it is a harmless file. If you do not know anything about your victim talk 2 him for like 3 days find out what he likes. Then lets say he likes football and naked women XD. say to him its a funny game where you play a 5minute 2D football match and if you win a sexc girl comes up on the screen and strips or something along them lines. Im not to good at social engineering. You could even say to your friend/victim that it is a patch for a game that you know that they have and it adds on extra things. The Server is now on there computer and they have double clicked it. If you checked the melt server option then the server will basically evaporate into their computer. They say hey its not working you say hey thats strange it works on my comp. Ahh fuck it i cant b bothered 2 send it again..

Ok so now you have the server running on there comp and it has opened up the default port for you to connect to.

Once again open Yuri Rat and click on listen. Yuri rat will then listen for your online servers that you have gave to people running on the default port 7898. If the person who you sent the rat to is not online you cant connect. When the server you sent out to your friend/victim a balloon notification will pop up. Note that yuri rat should still be listening for the servers. The server will show up in yuri rat. You right click and press connect. And there you go. you are now successfully connected to your victim

Ok now without uploading plug ins from yuri rat to your friends/victims computer you will only be able to do limited things with the program which are Download files from there comp & put files from your comp onto their comp.

When you are connected click on plug ins and them upload all of them.

You will then have access to keyloggers, screen capture and muc more. If you get stuck click on the help button and it wil tel you more aout plug ins
